Melody, our GRANDCHILD

Kayla and I got together and we took a few last maternity photos before her due date of February 1st.

Little did we know she would wake up at 2 am on January 23rd with regular contractions.  She had worked a full shift at Great Harvest Bread Co. the day before and had a few practice contractions.  It had been a hard day and she was planning to tell her boss that she would finish out the week and be done until the baby was born.  She called me at 3 am and came over.  Jason was out of town in Texas for work, so she and I just hung out, watching Fixer-Upper and timing contractions.  They were getting pretty painful.  Labor is no joke!
At 7 after Kyle and Rachel left for school, we called the doctor on call, who told her to come to the office at 8:30 to get checked.  We put all of her bags in the car and headed over.  Her cervix was dilated to a 3 and she was 90% effaced.  They sent us over to the hopsital!  By the time Kayla got admitted and got an epidural, it was 11 or 12, and she was much more comfortable.
Then we just hung out and waited for her body to do it's thing.  This was the view from St. Mary's Hospital.  That's the Grand Mesa.
This was the machine waiting for a baby!

Jason's parents were in town and brought this goody by:
And then, at 6:33 pm, after pushing for 1 hour and 15 minutes, she was here!

St. Mary's is a baby friendly hospital, which means the baby comes out and right onto her momma.  The umbilical cord remains attached until is stops pulsing, and babies aren't even weighed an mesaured until they've spent an hour with mom and nursed for the first time.

It was such an honor for me to be there with Kayla.  I even got to cut the cord!  I've never been the support person before, it was pretty amazing.
Carol brought Rachel that evening and they were the first visitors. This is a happy aunt!

I went home the first night because I had a terrible headache.  I was back the next day and left in the afternoon to go to Rachel's basketball game.  We came straight back afterward.
The 3 of us stayed one more night in the hospital, and then Friday, January 25th was going home day.

Uncle Kyle finally got to meet her.  It took some cajoling to get him to hold her; he was afraid he would break her.  But she's safe with him.
These two girls are inseparable and smitten with one another.
They stayed with us for a week, and then off they were to their first home together

Somehow, everything seems right with the world when a perfect, tiny human joins it.
